State lawmakers were told Friday about the hurdles of creating manufacturing jobs in Pennsylvania and were urged to help make it easier to hire workers and expand businesses.
The House Republican Policy Committee, chaired by state Rep. Josh Kail, R-Beaver, held a two-hour hearing on the topic Friday afternoon in South Park. The hearing included testimony from representatives from Sarris Candies, CNX Resources Corp. (NYSE: CNX), Vista Metals Inc. and United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X). They discussed issues in workforce development, tax and permitting reform, and the need to keep people in Pennsylvania. Kail promised legislators would keep focused on these and other issues.
Kail said the rise of the natural gas industry as well as last year's opening of the Shell Polymers' petrochemical plant in Beaver County are both ways to build manufacturing in Pennsylvania.
"We want to find a way to see it stay here and see it grow," Kail said.
