In the News: CNX’s Bat Stewardship Supports Monessen’s City Park

The Mon Valley Independent recently highlighted CNX’s bat stewardship efforts at Monessen’s City Park, where employees installed a bat box to provide additional roosting habitat. The project brings together employee teamwork, wildlife conservation, and practical support for a local community.
CNX employees built the seven-chamber box using Pennsylvania Game Commission plans and installed it September 4, along with three bluebird boxes.
Constructed with a rough-cut hemlock interior and durable aluminum exterior, the bat box was placed in a location selected for adequate sunlight and clear access for bats.
“The City Park installation is part of CNX’s broader bat stewardship effort to provide additional roosting habitat and help residents understand the importance of bats,” Daniel Bitz, CNX’s director of permitting, told the Independent. “The box offers an alternative to homes and attics, while supporting conservation efforts for bat populations affected by white nose syndrome.”
Beyond providing habitat, the installation increases awareness of bats’ role in the ecosystem, including their consumption of insects. It also aims to reduce potential conflicts between bats and residents by providing another summer roosting option.
CNX provides and installs bat boxes at no cost to community partners. The Monessen project reflects the company’s Appalachia First vision and micro-TIL approach to community investment: tangible, impactful and local.
