At its best, community support is not abstract. It is a roof repaired before more rain comes through, a safe bathroom for a disabled veteran, a water heater replaced, or a phone that helps a student connect with a job opportunity.

That’s the essential idea behind CNX’s micro-TIL approach – addressing immediate needs close to home with direct, flexible support.

Since announcing its micro-TIL community investment in February 2025, CNX and its local partners have been helping families, veterans, students, and seniors throughout its communities navigate the kinds of problems that often remain out of public view, but issues that can make a major difference in whether a household remains stable.

In some cases, that has meant emergency response after storms and other sudden disruptions. Following severe weather in Westmoreland County, local partners helped clear fallen trees, restore access to damaged properties, provide potable water to residents in a mobile home community, and support repairs that made storm-damaged homes livable again. In another case after a house fire affected a local first responder’s family, CNX Foundation helped fill one remaining unmet need by providing a bird cage for the family’s pets.

Other efforts have centered on basic housing safety. Elderly residents dealing with fallen limbs and property damage were connected to tree removal help, while families facing major home repair issues received support ranging from bathroom floor restoration after plumbing damage to a full roof replacement over a teenager’s bedroom. In another household, a family that had gone more than a year without hot water saw a cracked water heater replaced after it began creating a carbon monoxide risk inside the home.

School-connected referrals show another side of the work. In one case, a recent graduate had unexpectedly become the primary caretaker for younger siblings while also working full time, and support helped connect her to legal guidance, educational planning, job pathways, resume help, financial literacy, and FAFSA assistance. In another, a student trying to help support her household was struggling to connect with employers because she could not reliably be reached, so practical assistance helped her get a working phone and transportation support for the first stretch of employment.

Some of the most immediate interventions have focused on family stabilization. When one household fell behind after a parent lost employment, support helped bring utilities current and put groceries back in the home. In another case involving eviction and multiple overlapping barriers, short-term lodging and connections to longer-term mental health, food, clothing, and household resources helped create space for a more durable solution.

Veterans’ needs have also been part of that same hyper-local response. One disabled veteran received bathroom upgrades to make his home accessible, another was connected to extensive dental treatment that addressed serious pain and disease, and a Vietnam veteran recovering from a stroke received a wheelchair ramp so he could safely enter and exit his home.

What ties these stories together is precision and commitment.

CNX is following through on ensuring its micro-TIL strategy is direct, community-driven, and agile rather than filtered through broader, slower-moving systems. After the past year, the model is making a true difference: identifying obstacles in front of a family or individual and partnering with local contractors and service providers to help remove them before a situation worsens.

That may mean a major repair, or it may mean something much smaller. But when the support is timely, local, and specific to the need, even a modest intervention can help restore a sense of safety, stability, and momentum. That is what makes micro-TIL more than a slogan: not the size of any one act, but the consistency of a strategy built around meeting real needs close to home.
