A groundbreaking initiative in the heart of Appalachia is proving how engineering innovation and creativity can reshape the region’s energy landscape. Recently, members of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee’s Supply Chains Tax Team, led by Congresswoman Carol Miller (WV), toured the Buchanan Mine in Southwest Virginia, which is one of the only coal mines in the country equipped with CNX’s methane capture technology.
During the visit, Representatives Morgan Griffith (VA), Mike Kelly (PA), and Randy Feenstra (IA) observed firsthand how methane vented from coal mines is harnessed and converted into a valuable energy resource with broad applications including power generation, clean hydrogen production, sustainable fuels, and for industrial processes.
Methane emitted from coal mines account for approximately 10% of all U.S. emissions, with about 80% of those concentrated in the Appalachian region. Mines continue to emit even after they are abandoned or closed and CNX, while not a coal mining company, has pioneered a process to capture and repurpose the waste emissions.
However, without sound policy, our ability to compete in the global market of clean energy innovations is in jeopardy. It is imperative that policymakers understand the importance of waste methane abatement technologies to meaningfully tackle emissions.
Properly incentivizing such technologies “is an important first step to secure our economic and energy success,” Representative Miller emphasized. “If we can take mine methane emissions and turn them into an energy source, the United States will remain dominant on the global stage.”
“Capturing waste methane and utilizing it for our energy needs is a win-win,” underscored Ravi Srivastava, president of New Technologies at CNX. “We can clean up the environment and at the same time create good jobs in communities that need it the most while increasing our energy security.”
As a pioneer of coal mine methane capture, CNX is working with the Supply Chain Tax Team to modernize existing tax frameworks to build a more resilient energy future. We look forward to continuing to work with elected leaders – from D.C. to Richmond to Harrisburg – in order to advance energy solutions that uplift Appalachian communities.
The fact that the Buchanan Mine is one of the only mine methane capture projects in the world “speaks directly to the need to incentivize this behavior so that such investments can accelerate across Appalachia and beyond,” Srivastava continued.
For the communities of Appalachia, this opportunity represents more than just an environmental breakthrough; it is a beacon of economic revitalization. By preserving blue-collar jobs and maintaining the region’s economic vitality, this initiative aligns directly with America’s environmental justice priorities and ensures that the country’s energy and manufacturing sectors continue to thrive, but in a manner that contributes to a cleaner, healthier world.
As Congressional members return to Washington with a renewed understanding of the potential for CMM capture and use technologies, the message is clear: the future of clean energy is not just about reducing emissions, but also about creating resilient communities and preserving livelihoods.
This pioneering methane capture facility is not just a step forward for environmental technology, it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and a commitment to a sustainable, equitable future that starts in America’s energy heartland.
