On Friday, May 15, CNX and its Bats of Appalachia Stewardship Program visited Trinity Intermediate School in Washington, Pa., to install a bat box and talk with 4th and 5th grade students about the important role bats play in the local ecosystem.
For CNX, the visit was a chance to connect with Trinity students and educators while helping build awareness of bats’ ecological value, including the role they play as natural insect-eaters.

The visit came at a meaningful time of year.
Across Appalachia, including Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, May is an important seasonal period for bats as they settle into summer roosts and maternity season begins. In Pennsylvania, bats typically arrive at summer roosts in April, and females give birth in late May and early June.
For CNX, the Trinity visit reflects a broader commitment to practical, local stewardship. CNX’s bat program includes community bat box installations, conservation partnerships, and larger habitat-support efforts designed to help protect Appalachian bats, a unique group of wildlife that's crucial to the region.
By combining education with on-the-ground habitat support, projects like the Trinity bat box installation give students a closer look at wildlife stewardship while creating new roosting space that can benefit bats in the community.
